Hello, today we are traveling through the Moravian Karst, namely through one of the five groups of caves open to visitors. These caves are called Punkevnye and they are the “heart” of the Moravian Karst, which is the largest karst cave system in Europe and a national nature reserve. It is located in South Moravia (the second largest region in the Czech Republic by area and population), in the vicinity of the city of Brno, not far from the small town of Blansko.
The total length of the massif is about 25 kilometers, and the number of caves exceeds 1000; the total area of the entire territory of the national park is 92 kilometers! Today we are getting acquainted with the Punkva Caves. They are located in the northern part of the karst on the left side of the canyon formed by the Punkva River, the name of which comes from the Old Czech word, which translated means “to fall”, “to fall out”. The river appears and disappears, in a word, “falls out” and “flows” into the space of the caves, forming a bizarre landscape of the canyon. During the excursion, tourists will descend to a depth of 187 meters - this is the height difference in Punkva. The temperature in the cave is constant - 8 degrees.
The cave can be accessed by a cable car from above and by a fun, retro-style road train that brings tourists right to the entrance. No one explored the caves until the beginning of the 20th century, when the famous explorer and speleologist Karel Absolon conducted his first expedition in Punkva. An attempt was made by his grandfather, Heinrich Wankel, also a famous speleologist, to go by water to Matsokha (Stepmother in Russian) - the deepest abyss, which has a depth of 187.5 m. A local monk, whose name has not been preserved by history, tried to go down to the bottom in the middle of the century before last, but was unsuccessful. Armed with equipment and flotation devices, Absolon walked through the cave to the end. Since then, namely since 1909, the dry part, and since 1920, boating in the caves is available all year round. The current area of the caves has been accessible since 1933, the length of the entire route is 1250m. Inspection time 1 hour. The average air temperature is 7-8 °C, the average air humidity is 99%. In Western European mythology, gnomes lived in caves, fantastic creatures that lived in the depths of the earth and mountains and guarded underground treasures and treasures. And now we invite you to look into this amazing underground labyrinth, a place of stunning beauty with a huge number of stalactites and stalagmites, found throughout the tourist route.
