Sobre o museu
The National Archaeological Museum of Campli was founded in July 1988 in order to house the precious finds of the archaeological excavations of the nearby necropolis of Campovalano. It is set up in the heart of the small town, in the former convent of the church of San Francesco, which was erected by the mendicant order during 1200.
Currently, the site of Campovalano is one of the archaeological symbols of Abruzzo but its history begins long ago. The first finds, rare and quite random, were made by local farmers in the 800, but the real discoveries will take place only in the 60 years of the following century.
In 1967 Valerio Cianfarani, at the time superintendent of the antiquities of Abruzzo and Molise, began a vast excavation campaign, which brought to the discovery of 180 burials. A number that, following further investigation, exceeded 600 units.
The museum itinerary develops in chronological order, with the aim of describing every historical phase of the life of the necropolis, focusing on the cultural aspects that have made the archaeological area of Campovalano unique.
