Sobre o museu
The Church of St John the Baptist at Stanwick is situated in an ancient sacred landscape which is indicated by the remains of Anglo-Saxon carved stones re-used in the walls of this medieval church. However, this is a much more ancient landscape of power, royalty, and warfare than the Anglo-Saxon stonework signals. The church is sited within Stanwick Camp an Iron Age earthwork fortification which was probably a centre of power for Cartimandua, queen of the Brigantes tribe.
The church is under the care of the Churches Conservations Trust a charity that helps to look after over 350 unique and historic churches across England. It is thanks to the generousity of our communities and supporters that we are able to keep the doors open for all to use and love this fantastic buildings.
It costs around £2,725 a year to maintain Stanwick St John please help us continue to look after this ancient site by texting STW to 70970 to donate £5 or 70191 to give £10. Your help and support really does make a difference. Thank You.

On researching our family history, we visited the church to see the brass plaque to Elizabeth Catterick. The narration identified the recumbent statues were potential Catterick's too. The resource files provided a translation of the plaque and signposted us to other Catterick's. The narrator was excellent and we loved her stories. Thankyou.
