Welcome to the St. James' Church audio tour! We are happy to tell you why this church is so special.
You are standing in a historic place. This building has occupied an important place in Vlissingen for seven centuries. Few cities in our country have experienced as much war violence as Vlissingen, which is important for trade and coastal defence. And St. James' Church was the central place where people in need and joy came together. After Vlissingen chased away the Spanish occupation on its own in 1572, St. James' Church became Protestant and the statues of saints, altars and other decorations disappeared.
Count Floris the 5th ordered the construction of St. James' Church. William of Orange visited the church several times and in 1583 an attack was even planned on him by placing a bomb. It ended well because the Prince did not show up.
Admiral Michiel de Ruyter grew up in Vlissingen and was baptized in this church. This is also where the young Elisabeth Bekker, better known as the writer Betje Wolff, went to church. She resisted the established order and was ashamed of her city's share in the slave trade. The great social reformer, Reverend A.S.L. Talma, was also here as a preacher on the pulpit.
Every year on May 5 - Liberation Day - a lecture is held in St. James' Church about the meaning of the Free Word. This is the Van Randwijk Lecture, named after journalist and resistance fighter H.M. van Randwijk.
