Sobre o museu

The Center for Environmental Education (CREAM) is a space for study, training, and visitation linked to the Municipal Department of Education, located within one of the most significant remnants of the Atlantic Forest in the interior of the state of São Paulo: Serra do Japi.

The site is used for activities with public school students and also receives researchers, supporting initiatives related to knowledge production about the territory. Currently, CREAM also hosts the Sustainability department of the Municipal Education Secretariat and the Serra do Japi Foundation, establishing itself as a point of connection between education, science, and environmental management.

This territory stands out for its ecological complexity, biological diversity, and strategic role in regional environmental conservation.

Situated in a transition zone between different vegetation formations, the area presents ecotonal characteristics that support high levels of biodiversity, including endemic and environmentally sensitive species. This reinforces its importance as a priority area for conservation.

The Atlantic Forest biome, to which it belongs, is internationally recognized as a biodiversity hotspot — a term used to designate regions with exceptionally high species richness and significant levels of habitat loss. Today, only a small fraction of its original extent remains, increasing the importance of preserved areas such as Serra do Japi.

Serra do Japi extends across the municipalities of Jundiaí, Cabreúva, and Cajamar, covering approximately 35,000 hectares of protected area. This scale highlights its importance not only locally, but also regionally, in terms of ecology, management, and environmental conservation.

Over recent decades, the territory has been subject to various protection mechanisms, including its official listing as natural heritage by CONDEPHAAT. This designation recognizes not only its ecological value but also its historical and cultural significance.

Within this context, CREAM acts as a public space for environmental education, promoting experiences that connect scientific knowledge, pedagogical practices, and direct engagement with the territory.

More than a visitation site, it is a place for learning and awareness, where direct contact with the landscape helps deepen the understanding of the relationships between nature, city, and society.

This tour is part of this approach, inviting visitors to engage with the territory through multiple perspectives, combining information, perception, and experience.
