Hyde Park's beginnings were in the 1880s, spurred by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant building the first bridge across the Hillsborough River in 1888 to connect his new Tampa Bay Hotel with the area. Before that, in 1886, O.H. Platt bought land from the Robert Jackson farm, named the new community after his hometown of Hyde Park, Illinois, and started the initial subdivisions. The construction of the bridge and the subsequent development of large, elegant homes by early residents like James Watrous led to Hyde Park becoming Tampa's first western suburb and a desirable residential community.. This tour will take you back to the historical homes of this Iconic Tampa neighborhood!
