Around 1130, Henri I Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy and King of England, gave an 11-hectare plot of land to the Hospitallers in return for services rendered in the Holy Land. The town, named « Ville-Dieu » (God’s town) by the knigths, developed rapidly thanks to the privileges connected with this gift, which included freedom from tithes to the Bishop, taxes, and forced labour for the King. - 1 Villa Dei
