Audio tour Summary
Alytus is the sixth most significant town in Lithuania. This city is lucky to have amazing forest-covered hills around it and has a 16 km long bend of the River Nemunas. The origins of this city date back to the 14th century, when Alytus was a fortress standing on a hill. Thanks to its strategic position at the end of the 19th century Alytus was transformed into a third-class border fortress by the order of the tsarist government.
But today the military defence is not the primary function of Alytus, because it is known as the capital city of the Dzūkija ethnographic region. Today Alytus is worth visiting, because of the nurtured Old Garden of the City, the freedom monument (The Angel of Freedom) as well as for the memorial to the partisans of the Dainava district who died for Lithuanian independence.
Within this tour, you will see all the main sights that are located in the central part of the city. But we also recommend visiting the White Rose bridge and the sights situated around it. Both of these tourism clusters are fully covered within this tour.
