Over het museum

All the items on display in the Oriental Art Museum of Venice were originally part of the private collection of His Royal Highness Henry of Bourbon, Count of Bardi.

The history of the collection – now the property of the Italian State – is illustrated on panels at the entrance.

It is one of the most important European collections of Japanese art from the Edo period (1603-1868) and also contains sections dedicated to China and Southeast Asia.

Around 1600 the Japanese Tokugawa clan extended its control to the whole country and chose Edo (modern-day Tōkyō) as its shogunal capital. The Tokugawa guaranteed the nation a period of peace that lasted until the second half of the 19th century, isolating the country from the rest of the world. For this reason, the arms and armours displayed here were used mostly for parades.
