In my experience, there are two kinds of people in the world:

those who are willing to risk life and limb to pull over and read historic markers and those who just wonder what they said.

This tour is for both of you.

No more is there a need to stop to read any of the 60 VA Historical Highway Markers in the Charlottesville Albemarle area….. now you can simply listen to them, even through your car’s audio system… really it’s that easy and that elegant.

    Here’s how it works

Now that you’ve installed the free izi.travel app, and found Drive-by History in the Charlottesville area, I recommend you download the tour onto your phone using wi-fi. This way you won’t be dependent on cell towers.

Check to see that your location setting is on because the app will use GPS to find the markers, and be sure the volume of your phone is up.

When you’re ready, press start, put your phone aside, and start driving, or walking or biking, even riding a bus. It all works.

As you approach one of the Virginia Historical markers, the audio will automatically begin – first alerting you with a little beep, and then a wonderfully engaging voice will read you the marker. No need to even look at your phone… if fact don’t do that if you’re driving. And remember, If your phone is synced with your car through Bluetooth, this wonderfully engaging voice will come right through your car’s audio system – provided you’re in Bluetooth mode.

One other very cool feature of this app, is that once a marker has been triggered and read, it will not trigger again, so you won’t hear it over and over again… unless you want it to, in which case just reset the tour.

There are many ways to listen, even in the comfort of your own home, using the izi.travel website, or manually on your phone. Have fun with it.

And let us know if you’d like to hear more of these marker tours throughout historic Virginia.
