The coast of what is now known as the Ijsselmeer (Ijssel lake) was largely formed by the sea and the battle of the settlers against the water. The most dramatic change for the landscape is the construction of the Afsluitdijk (Closure Dyke). The damming off changed the salty, seawater bay into a fresh-water lake.
