Over het museum

The activity of the institute dates back to 1973, when Romano Dezi and Rita Ramazzotti, founders of the museum, combined their passionate activity of paleontological research and collection of finds with a series of exhibitions and interventions at the schools of the town.

Since 1993, the finds collected, purchased or received as gifts during the first 20 years of the curators' activity have been housed at the current location, Palazzo Rossini Lucangeli, a historic building whose construction began in 1570, in Via Santa Maria della Porta, 65. In 2017 the museum was donated by the founders to the Municipality of Macerata, entering the network of Civic Museums, under the care of the "Friends of the Museum of Natural History" association.

The exhibition is divided into four main sections: paleontological, mineralogical, invertebrate and vertebrate, presented in the 400 square meters of exhibition, to an audience of 6000 people who visit the museum every year.

In recent years, the museum has been enriched with acquisions from donations from private and public collections of birds, shells, insects and trophies from all over the world, able to show unique finds in the Marche region. Particularly interesting is the ornithological collection rich in 270 species, the malacological collection with more than 20,000 shells and the paleontological collection with numerous local finds. Of particular interest is the ornithological collection rich in 270 species, the malacological one with more than 20,000 shells and the paleontological one with numerous local finds. In conclusion, a visit to the Museum allows you to learn about those evolutionary processes that have guided the development of the myriad forms of plant and animal life that populate terrestrial environments, describing the momentary victory of groups of animals such as dinosaurs and ammonites, the birth of mammals and their current explosion. It is an ideal journey from the formation of the Planet, to the development of life in water, to the conquest of the emerged lands with amphibians and the dominance of reptiles, up to the current rulers of the Earth: mammals.

Good vision.
