The Native Brotherhood emerged at a time when Residential Schools and the Sixties Scoop were working together to eradicate Indigenous cultures, languages, spirituality, and communities. Prisons likewise remove Indigenous peoples from their families, communities, and cultures. The Native Brotherhood and its newsletter became sites for cultural exploration, resurgence, and eventually activism that required prisons to recognize Indigenous prisoners’ spiritual needs under the Canadian Charter.
