This itinerary has been designed as a leisurely walking tour, lasting approximately 3 hours. We have selected a series of visits that follow a geographical logic, minimizing unnecessary travel and ensuring a pleasant experience. The route allows for the exploration of Guimarães' most iconic landmarks, offering an immersion in the city's rich history and beauty.
We begin the tour at the Castle of Guimarães, an undeniable symbol of the foundation of Portugal. This imposing monument is a cornerstone of Portuguese independence and offers breathtaking views of the city. Nearby is the Church of São Miguel, where, according to tradition, King Afonso Henriques was baptized, making this place a key point in our history.
A few steps away, we move on to the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, a monumental 15th-century building with unique architecture that reflects the power and influence of the nobility of the time. While we will not enter the building, we can admire its grandeur and explore the surrounding gardens.
Next, we descend to the Largo da Oliveira, one of the most iconic spaces in Guimarães. Here, we find the Padrão do Salado, erected in the 14th century, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, both symbols of the city’s historical and architectural wealth. Just a few steps away, we arrive at Praça de Santiago, a charming medieval square where we can admire the old facades and feel the vibrant life of the historic center.
We continue on to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos, located at the beginning of Largo da República do Brasil. This Baroque church stands out with its elegant façade and the gardens surrounding it, offering a relaxing pause to contemplate the beauty of the city.
Next, we pass by the Convent of São Francisco and the Church of São Domingos, two religious monuments that represent Guimarães’ spiritual and architectural legacy. The exteriors of these buildings offer excellent opportunities for photography and historical reflection.
We conclude the tour at Largo da República do Brasil, a livelier area and the perfect place to end our journey. Here, in addition to relaxing in the gardens, you can find cafés and shops where you can enjoy the final moments of this unforgettable walk through the city of Guimarães.
