The Annahütte Hiking Trail is a symbolic cross-border hiking journey through the Karawanks mountains, tracing paths once shaped by wartime movement, smuggling routes, and centuries of cultural exchange between Austria and Slovenia. The trail leads to the ruins of the Annahütte, a former alpine refuge just above the modern border, now standing as a powerful symbol of memory, reconciliation, and shared European heritage.

Along the route, hikers pass through alpine meadows, dense pine forests, and panoramic ridgelines offering sweeping views of both countries - inviting reflection on the region’s layered history, from WWII partisan resistance and Cold War border controls to today’s open Schengen crossings.

More than a scenic walk, the trail is designed as a space for remembrance and renewal. We hope that the 10 Audio Tour Stations encourage pilgrims to engage with different aspects of local history that our organization ARCH is trying to preserve. We also hope that you support us in the effort of advocating for the rebuilding of Annahütte. This vision has been carried forward since the early 2000s by Josef Puschan, whose work towards rebuilding the Annahütte was driven by what he called a historical obligation, particularly after Slovenia’s accession to the European Union. His tireless dedication, and that of the Friends of the New Annahütte, laid the foundation for a broader collaboration.

Today, the project is supported by ARCH International and its European branch, ARCH Europe, who bring their expertise in cultural heritage, post-conflict reconciliation, and community engagement to ensure that the site becomes not only a restored mountain hut - but also a lasting place of cross-border connection and shared memory.
