Welcome to the Menominee County Historical Society Digital Walking Tour. Menominee, Michigan — like its sister city Marinette, Wisconsin — is just one thread in a rich tapestry of local history. This tapestry is woven from the lives of immigrants, inventors, and industries such as paper mills, lumber drives, and fur trading. It also honors the long-standing presence of the Menominee Indian Tribe and the ancient Old Copper Culture that dates back thousands of years.

Today, you’ll embark on an exciting walking tour through our charming historic downtown waterfront district, nestled along the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. This tour has been thoughtfully compiled by members of the Michael J. Anuta Research Center. While we don’t attempt to cover every detail of architecture and history, our goal is to paint a vivid picture of what this area looked like during its early development.

    Please enjoy the journey.

Special thanks go to those who made the digital version of this tour possible. Mike Kaufman, Director of the Menominee County Historical Society, provided valuable information and original photography. Abigail Hoijer, Museum Curator, assisted with organizing materials and coordinating communications. Bob Landre of Menominee offered technical support for the original walking tour booklet. Ben Dorris from the Senter for Community Action contributed updated photos and helped with organization. Tony LaMalfa of Menominee served as the tour narrator. The Menominee Business Development Corporation, under the leadership of Executive Director Lexi Hagan, led the effort to transfer the original tour into a digital format.
