The exhibition “SPORT is ART” is dedicated to sporting reportage photography of the 20th century and comprises shots from the collections of the Institute of Russian Realist Art, the Multimedia Art Museum and the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography. The exhibition has been organized to coincide with the FIFA World Cup, which will be held this year in Russia for the first time in its 88-year long history.
Sport was one of the key themes for art in the 20th century. The sportsmen and athletes in the pictures of Alexander Deineka and Alexander Samokhvalov are rightfully regarded as iconic symbols of the era. In images featuring contemporary subjects, the artists regularly employed bold compositional approaches, as well as experimenting with the techniques and styling of their painting. One might think that sports photography, in comparison with painting, would be predictable. Indeed, shots published in the mass media, selected by an editor, cropped and retouched, present an official version of sporting history that is composed in line with political and other demands of the day. Outside of the confines of the pages of magazines, however, the photographs stun with the richness of their artistic qualities, and in some cases they can be more powerful than painted works.
Any reportage photograph is the quintessence of realism. Behind each of the photographs shown here there is a real person, a real record or knockout, a key moment in this sporting event. The reporter is faced with a task that is at once very simple and extremely complex – the creation of an impression of presence in a shot, forcing the viewer to work out, sense or conceive the true meaning of what is taking place. The photographers Lev Borodulin, Dmitry Vozdvizhensky, Evgeny Volkov, Nina Sviridova, Vsevolod Tarasevich and Igor Utkin managed to find just the right angle, the right lighting and the right gestures needed to convey absolutely everything there is to know about the instant that they captured.
