For nearly 200 years, the Locust Grove Cemetery or the North Queen Stree Cemetery has been the resting place for many Shippensburg area African-Americans. The cemetery was originally acknowledged in 1828 by a Cumberland County deed that highlighted the "colored cemetery" on the site. Amid these African-Americans interred within the cemetery lay twenty-six Civil War veterans, and three of which served in the powerful and mighty 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiment - the first combat unit open to black men during the Civil War.
