With its variations around granite, water and metal, the Little City of Character is at the same time a historic town, a place of relaxation around water and a site with an astonishing industrial heritage.
According to the Chronicle of Saint Brieuc, its name comes from the Breton kastell (castle) and Audren, a legendary leader of the Bretons of Armorica who ascended the throne in 445, probably son of Solomon I of Armorica, who is said to have built a motte feudal around 447 between the current city and the pond of Châtelaudren. Audren is nevertheless very probably the name of a small local lord, founder of the town in the 11th century.
