If you only associate Alentejo with the vast plains, brushstrokes here and there by beautiful cork oaks, then you still don't know the charms of the Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede where most of the parishes of Portalegre are located. In this Alentejo, the dry plain gives way to surprising serrados and verdant valleys through which lush streams slide. A real oasis in the south of Portugal.
The natural heritage of Serra de São Mamede, full of unique flora and fauna that provide a natural environment of excellence. Among granite escarpments, schist and limestone, rocky outcrops and gentle valleys, dot the rural landscape of cultivated fields, woods and scrubland. As an organic island, the richest and most diverse south of the Tagus and also the highest, hide here cascades that we consider unbelievable in Alentejo and a handful of fantastic walking trails truly fabulous.
And the best of all is that the natural heritage of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park and its parishes is joined by its rich historical heritage. Millenary tapirs and menhirs, ruins of Roman towns and bridges, medieval villages and imposing castles, silent guardians of Portugal's history.
