Geographical and Historical Notes on Mondonio

Once an independent municipality, Mondonio is a district of the municipality of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, in the province of Asti, in the Lower Monferrato. The territory of Castelnuovo Don Bosco also includes other districts such as Morialdo, Ranello, Bardella, and Nevissano.

The landscape of Mondonio is characterized by hills and elevations typical of the Asti countryside. Since the 1970s, its historic center has been recognized as a heritage site, and the surrounding area has been designated as a green zone, preventing new construction, except for agricultural buildings.

The foundation of the village of Mondonio dates back to between the 10th and 11th centuries, with the first settlement located on the hill called "Razè" (today Raseto), where a small Romanesque chapel, the Church of the Madonna di Raseto, still stands, preserving traces from the 12th century. The name Mondonio first appears in documents from 1034.

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the settlement was moved from its original site in Raseto to the current location of the fortified village. Mondonio was part of the Marca di Aleramo and, in 1164, came under the Marquisate of Monferrato, remaining so until 1631, when it passed to the Savoy. The castle and village were heavily damaged during various conflicts, including attacks by the troops of Chieri, Visconti, Spanish, and French forces.

Over the centuries, Mondonio was governed by several noble families, such as the "Mondonio" family, the Turco of Montemagno, and the Scozia of Pino. Until 1929, Mondonio was an independent municipality, after which it became a district of Castelnuovo Don Bosco. Despite demographic decline, the district still maintains a sense of community, thanks to the presence of the parish and events organized by local associations. In 1969, to commemorate Domenico Savio, it became "Mondonio San Domenico Savio."
