About the museum

Museum De Bastei tells and shows the tale of the river Waal. Take a plunge in the museum rooms to set foot on a journey through past, present and future. Here, at the river Waal, in the oldest city of the Netherlands, you may touch the past, discover the flora and fauna of the river area of the province of Gelderland. You may also explore and study in the Bastei academy. A visit to the museum offers a pleasant and valuable experience for old and young researchers. Enjoy and

Bridging times and places

Museum D Bastei is located in Nijmegen – the oldest city of Nijmegen – along Europe´s busiest navigated river Waal, and near to the rich wilderness and nature of the Gelderse poort. The museum connects past and present. The history of the river can be followed backwards in time, deep down to the formation of the landscape and the earliest human settlements on the city location. The archaeological treasures offer a unique opportunity to become familiar with the old and new
interconnection of city and river. Walking in the museum Bastei means wandering through the tangible past of Nijmegen.

    Not everything available in English yet but enough to get the gist of it and make for a pleasant experience filled with interesting things. Not always clear where to scan the QR codes or find corresponding exhibit numbers.

    Een zeer sfeervol museum, waar heel veel te zien is voor jong en oud. Prachtig opgezet met regelmatig verlichte tekst en filmbeelden op muren en vloeren. Mooie films onderweg tijdens je verkenning, indrukwekkende film over de ijstijd waardoor je beleeft hoe de stuwwand is ontstaan. Geweldig leuk dwalen over en door romeinse weggetjes en muren.
