This audio tour introduces you to the Italian educator Maria Montessori — an extraordinary woman who was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her life’s work was dedicated to the development of children and how we can help them grow into independent individuals who show respect for their surroundings, for others, and for the earth. Did you know that Maria Montessori often spent time in Noordwijk towards the end of her life, and that she enjoyed the sea and the flower fields? Since she passed away in Noordwijk aan Zee, her grave can be found here at the Catholic cemetery in Noordwijk.

The music you’re hearing was a cherished song in the Montessori family. In 1940, while traveling in India, Maria Montessori heard it and was deeply moved. The song, Santa Lucia, reminded her of home and tells the story of a picturesque waterfront district in the Bay of Naples.
