Calpe is a small town located on the north of the Costa Blanca (Alicante Province). The rock (“Peñón de Ifach”) is a symbol of Costa Blanca. It rises to 322 meters above Calpe and goes almost a kilometre into the sea, dividing the coast into two picturesque bays – “Arenal-Bol” and “La Fossa”. Nearby there is a busy fishing port, with the famous auction that takes place on the fish market, which stills operate during all year round. Near the port, you can find the fish restaurants of Calpe, which attract foodies from all over the coast. The area where the town of Calpe is located has been inhabited since ancient times: archaeologists have found evidence of the presence of different ancient cultures, as Iberians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Moors (Arabs), Visigoths and Romans. African pirates regularly attacked the coast until the 17th century and, for that reason and in order to get protected against them, the city walls and the lookout tower were built in the old town.
