Calvene: a natural theatre for travelling through history.

 At a first and, perhaps casual, passage, Calvene appears like an indefinite semi-flat territory: it is crossed by a provincial road, which certainly is not one of the primary routes the tourists take to go and come back from the Altipiano dei Sette Comuni.

With its center away from the main street, Calvene continues to hide a more than thousand-year history under its verticality: north towards Asiago, south towards the Bregonze hills.

The origin of Calvene is ancient and, furthermore, illustriously documented: the past history of Calvene sounds particularly interesting and, above all, unexpected in virtue of the prominent role - coming from the status of episcopal estate- this village played.

The story of Calvene can be read effectively through the toponymy of the town, which make the traveler step back in history: Prehistoric times, Roman civilization, Middle Age and barbarian invasions, Communal Age, era of the Serenissima Republic, foreign dominations, Risorgimento (Italian Resurgence) and World Wars.

The story of Calvene is a long film that any visitor can choose to watch immersed in the natural scenery of Calvene, by walking through its hamlets, by discovering its iconic sites, by visiting the memorials, but, above all, by breathing the same air of those woods that were the tragic theater to the bloodiest war events.

Almost every corner of Calvene offers a story to tell - chronicles of facts, lives of individuals - and has the difficult task of diverting the memory and of leading to the knowledge of the most burning vicissitudes of the recent conflicts: the First and Second Wars World, with the years of the Resistance, and with the consequent emigration, which has gradually emptied this town, without, however, depriving it of its soul.

For this reason, Calvene is to be considered a widespread natural museum, where the traveler can exercise the memory on the First World War and on the Resistance, by passing from tangible to the intangible in a continuous osmotic flow, by binding his/her sensitivity to the pathos and to the way of feeling of a community.
