The Museum of History of St Petersburg University is the oldest museum of history of a higher education institution in Russia established in 1945.
The idea of creating a museum arose on the pages of the university newspaper in the 1930s and in the visitor book of the exposition on the history of the university organized in 1939.
While evacuation in Saratov during the 2nd World War, the dean of the History faculty and a group of historians would continue working on the history of the university and collecting materials for the future museum. In the fall of 1944, after the university returned from Saratov, they opened a new and comprehensive exhibition on the history of the university. At the meeting of the deans of all faculties and directors of research institutes on January 13th 1945, it was decided to reorganize the exhibition into the permanent museum.
Since then, the museum has been keeping, studying and popularizing the memory of the University history lasting three centuries since it was established by Peter the Great in 1724.
The Museum collections hold original documents and photographs, instruments and study guides, books, works of art and memorable things belonging to outstanding scientists, awards and gifts to the University.
Currently, there is a temporary exposition held at the Museum of History of St Petersburg University which is dedicated to the establishment of the university in 1724, its history in the 19th - early 20th centuries and its outstanding professors, scientists and graduates.
