The story of Giovanni Dalla Costa whose family has always managed to find stability despite the hard time Veneto has to go through but eventually was forced to emigrate. However, Giovanni won't go to Brazil as something greater in Alaska awaits him. From Veneto to France and then to America, working first in the coal mines and later in the gold ones; Giovanni becomes Jack, and from peasant he becomes sourdough. But the call of home, however, is an instinct too strong to repress.
