Audioguía Deprivations

As a rule, prisons are characterized by their deprivations. The prison system makes connections between prisoners and their families difficult, and isolation is commonly used as a means of punishment. Many Indigenous cultural traditions rely heavily on community. Seth Adema notes that “the administration of the modern prison was established with modes of reasoning that sought to colonize the body, mind, and soul.” Deprivation of cultural practices, family and community connections, and adequate food run parallel to experiences within the residential school system and can trigger traumatic memories.
