There are only two corbels with a whole human head in their mouths. In this instance we have a whole human in the pigs mouth. Now it is well known that one of the many entertainments of medieval country fairs was greasing a pig, and if you could catch and hold it for a time, it was yours-but of course it was an extremely difficult thing to do. This form of country fair entertainment still takes place to this day. Now as an artist or artisan how would you go about illustrating that a man didn’t win the contest, but in fact the pig did? I think that was the closest this particular artist could get-the corbel in question was executed with a great deal of humour- I’m the pig and I’m winning!
