This is a very exciting building here in Sydney as it is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Just taking a look at the facade of the building will help explain why it is so significant. It was built in 1819 by convict labour and contains many convict stories.
For thirty years it operated as a prison of sorts to house men and boys who were working in government gangs. Some 50 000 convicts have walked through the gates that you are now welcome to enter.
The history of the building extends far beyond the convict era. It served as a hostel for orphan girls, female immigration depot and, eventually, an asylum for aged women. It has therefore been a place of great hardship.
To hear the stories of those who lived inside and much more please feel free to visit. It is open daily from 10 am until 5 pm for an entrance fee of ten dollars for adults and five dollars for children and concessions.
Thank you for joining me on this tour around five of Sydney's Living Museums. I hope you have enjoyed your tour and you feel inspired to visit at least one of the museums we have seen today. Sydney Living Museums has a wonderful website if you are looking for more information. Otherwise enjoy your stay in Sydney and remember that our history is always right in front of you.
