SkyView Atlanta and The Tabernacle
When you cross by Nassau Street, you will see SkyView Atlanta on your right, across the street.
SkyView Atlanta is unmistakable as a landmark – it’s a 200 foot-tall transportable Ferris wheel that opened in 2013 and shows amazing views of the park and surrounding Atlanta area from the safety of its climate-controlled cars. You can get an aerial view of all the attractions you’ve seen on this tour and some that you’ll encounter later.
Right behind SkyView and visible from your vantage point across the street, you’ll see a popular Atlanta concert venue known as the Tabernacle. The building is over a hundred years old and was originally built to be a Baptist church, with the cornerstone being laid in 1910 and construction being completed in 1911. In 1996, the building was designated as an entertainment site for the Olympics and called the House of Blues. It finally became the Tabernacle in 1998 when an investor decided to develop it as a permanent concert venue. Over the years, it has hosted various comedy and music shows, including a week of Conan shows, starring late-night personality, Conan O’Brien.
Like many of the other buildings in this area, the Tabernacle was affected by the 2008 tornado. Water and roof damage along with several blown out windows kept the venue closed for almost two months. Today, the building is fully operational and has been called one of the top concert venues in the US by both Rolling Stone and Paste magazines.
