Gefiona's Fountain
Gefiona's Fountain. It is the largest monument in Copenhagen. Built on the initiative of the Carlsberg Foundation, founded by the brewing company of the same name, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Initially, they planned to place it on the main city square in front of the Copenhagen Town Hall. The fountain was invented by Danish artist Andreas Bungaard, who created these central figures in 1897. The fountain pool itself and the pedestal were finished in 1908 and it was first turned on on July 14, 1908. Since 1999, the fountain was under restoration and it was again turned on only in 2004. The fountain itself is a figure of the goddess Gefiona and four bulls, whom she controls. The Scandinavian legend inspired the creation of the sculptural composition of the artist, according to which the Swedish king Gülfe promised the goddess of fertility Gefiona to give the land, that she could plow in one day. Then the goddess turned her four sons into bulls and plowed a vast territory from sea to sea; and when Gefiona whiped the bulls, this huge piece of land came off the coast of Sweden and later became Danish territory. The fountain itself is not very large, but it is divided into several steps and beautifully decorated with stones. A fairly large amount of water flows from it as waterfall. The fountain is very beautifully illuminated in the dark. And now we have to go through the sea gates of the city.
