The first bridge across the Fontanka River – the Prachechny, or Laundry Bridge – is located directly at its source from the Neva River. The bridge dates from the reign of Catherine II – the time when they had only just begun to pave Palace Embankment in stone. So Laundry Bridge was one of the first of the city’s bridges to be built in stone likewise. The peculiar name arises from its location – directly adjacent to the palace laundry-yard.
