Sint-Jorishof in the Middle Ages was a court of St Joris' Guild, which was a guild of archers, among many other guard guilds. his ensured that the military powers were located close to the economic (the Cloth Hall) and political powers (the Belfry and the Town Hall). The stepped gable is adorned with the patron saint of the guild, Saint George, killing the dragon.
Initially it was just a wooden house, but in 15th century the current building was erected.
It was most famous to the people of Gent in the middle of the 20th century by its prestigious restaurant, known as Cour Saint-Georges. Currently this beautiful building stands empty and even inhabited by squatters.
