The American Duesenberg was the darling of Hollywood’s dream factory during the 1920s and 30s. Every movie star worth his or her salt had one. The extravagant motor cost a fortune!. The price was roughly 20.000 dollars, whereas an ordinary A-Ford at that time cost just 440 dollars. The model SJ was fitted with a 427 cubic inch (that is 7 litres), 8 cylinder engine with a supercharger. The engine delivered 320 hp and its top speed was over 125 mph (200 kilometres per hour).
Brothers Fred and August Düsenberg [op zijn Duits: Duzenberg] emigrated from Germany to the USA and established the company bearing their (anglicized) name in 1913. They were excellent engineers but less so businessmen. Succes didn’t come until Erret Lobban Cord took over the factory in 1926 and took on Gordon Buehrig as designer. Cord already owned Auburn and launched a car bearing his own name in 1929. The Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg-empire folded in 1937 as a result of the financial crisis.
