Luxembourg City History Museum
Welcome to the Luxembourg City History Museum!
This uniquely designed building is a mixture of old and new, ancient and modern! The museum itself is only about 20 years old, but the four buildings housing it go way back to the 17th century, and in some of them there are even remnants from the Middle Ages! The old buildings are, as you can see, renovated and a modern floating glass façade has been added to the museum, which blends perfectly with the old architecture.
Now let’s not stand out here, but enter the museum and explore what it has on display today. First of all; in this museum one of the most exciting things is actually the interior design, so let us first approach the panoramic glass lift! From up here we have a great view of all the floors. Can you see the rock foundations of the museum down there? And if you look out through the glass façade you can see The Rahm Plateau and the nice district of Grund.
What about the exhibitions? We cannot enter this fine museum only to use the lift, now can we? The museum shows the history of Luxembourg from its beginning about 1000 years ago.
So, if we start going down to the floors below the street level entrance there is a permanent collection illustrating the town's architectural and urban development. This modern museum has a multimedia system documenting the history of the town including its cultural, political and social development. This modern feature gives you as a visitor access to thousands of documents and lots of audio-visual sequences, so here you can really get a feeling of what Luxembourg was like in old times. Before going upstairs do have a look at the ancient, vaulted cellars discovered during excavations in the early 1990s.
When done down here we can go up to the upper floors and check out what the temporary exhibitions have to offer today! You can always learn something new here at the museum, so do enjoy with an open mind before we move on to the next tourist attraction here in Luxembourg.
