Grey seals swim in this basin, all females. Grey seals have a conical snout and are much larger than harbour seals.
Seals are the largest predators in the Netherlands. An adult animal can weigh up to 350 kilograms. For the safety of the animal caretaker, we have taught the seals that they only get fed when in the water.
The most prominent seal in this basin is Annie. She is the youngest of the three and is very playful. Sometimes, she jumps high out of the water.
Grey seal pups are born in the winter and have a thick white coat. Because they lie several weeks on an exposed sandbank while weaning, this thick coat keeps them nice and warm. After weaning, they are left to their own fate.
When people find a pup they always call us. Often times, there’s nothing wrong. Young grey seals can stay for weeks on land before entering the water for the first time. That’s why we don’t necessarily take the young grey seal to the sanctuary. Of course, we keep close watch to make sure all is well.
However, there are areas along the shore which are very busy with people or stray dogs. In that case, we always bring in the animal.
