The Saddle-backed tamarins live in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and other South American countries. They are small monkeys of the length up to 35 cm. These monkeys are considered omnivores; they eat even rind and pitchy juice. The gestation period is 140-168 days. As a rule a female gives birth to 2 youngsters. The average weight of a newborn is about 40 g. The male takes an active part i in the education of offspring. They reach the sexual maturity to three years. These monkeys live in small groups and they keep vigilant watch on their territory. From the early morning the males emit high-pitched sounds that indicate that this territory is occupied and vigilantly guarded. The Tamarins are very mobile they are able to jump up to 8 meters high. It is easy to breed them in captivity if they live in a family group.
