Green tree python
(Morelia viridis)
The Green tree python is distributed in Australia and on the islands of New Guinea. It inhabits moist forests of low-lying valleys and mountains to an altitude of 2000 m above sea level. It is a bright green tree snake with a long strong tail and broad head. There is usually a row of white spots along the back. Young pythons are usually yellow or red but at the age of two years they change the colour to green. The body length is up to 1.5 m and sometimes more. They feed on rodents, birds and occasionally eat lizards and frogs. Females lay eggs in tree hollows and coil up around them. The incubation period is 50 days. It is shorter than that one of the other pythons. The length of just hatched pythons is 30cm.
