Mangrove Monitor
(Varanus indicus)
The Mangrove monitor is distributed from the eastern islands of Indonesia to New Guinea, north of Australia and the Solomon Islands. It can also be found on many islands in the South China Sea and in mangrove forests of the coast and at water reservoirs in tropical forests. Local people hunt lizards because of their skin. This species reaches a total length of 150 cm. The color of the upper side is from reddish-brown to black with numerous scattered small spots and dots of cream, yellow or yellowish-green colour. The lower part of the body is white or cream. The tail is strongly compressed. It is a very good climber which often lies in branches above the water. In case of danger it jumps down and escapes swimming. It feeds on insects, fish, reptiles, birds and small mammals.
