Welcome to the National Archaeological Museum of Venice!
Placed in St. Mark's Square, on the first floor of the palace called Procuratie Nuove, near the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, it is the oldest museum of the town.

It has been opened to the public since 1596 and it displays sculptures and antiquities once belonged to Venetian noble families, who donated their collection to the Republic of Venice from the 16th century onwards.

The first ones to bequeath their collections were Domenico Grimani in 1523 and his nephew Giovanni Grimani in 1587.

You have the opportunity to admire beautiful Greek statues dated to the 5th and the 4th century BC, Roman portraits, reliefs, inscriptions, pottery, ivories, gems and an interesting coin collection.

Besides, there is also a small collection of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities entrusted by the Correr Museum.

The artworks on show come from the hinterland of the region of Veneto, from Rome, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Lybia.
