Audio tour Summary
Cultural heritage is what people take from the past and want to pass on to future generations because they value it. Cultural heritage includes objects, documents, buildings and so forth, but also practices, rituals, traditions and skills. Following UNESCO, the latter is referred to as intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO values this type of heritage because it testifies to human creativity, ensures cultural diversity and can promote respect for each other's uniqueness.
The rituals and student traditions (‘folklore’, as the students themselves call it) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel have a long and rich history. This walk briefly introduces you to some of the highlights of the folkloristic calendar and is an initiative of the Centre for Academic and Secular Humanist Archives (CAVA).
