• The history of Purana Qila dates to the 16th century when Delhi was ruled by the Mughals. Though it was a Fort, the Purana Qila was the royal headquarters during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Humayun and later Sher Shah Suri, the founder of Suri Empire. Later the Mughal capital shifted to Agra then to Shahjahanabad, leaving the Purana Qila abandoned. In the 20th century, the area was acquired by the Archaeological Survey of India and it became a protected monument.
