This is perhaps one of the most enthralling and electrifying places to visit in Istanbul given the recent history of the area. You’ll feel the buzz of passion and protestation when you arrive, a place where history is made.
Before the demonstrations of 2013 the square has a special place in every Turkish heart as its home to the Monument of the Republic, which commemorates the 5th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, which followed the Turkish war of Independence.
The square is considered by many as the heart of modern Istanbul and it’s a popular choice for both tourists and locals with a vast array of shops, restaurants and hotels.
The name comes from the Turkish word meaning distribution, and it was the point at which the main water lines from the North of Istanbul met the branched off to other areas of the city.
Istikal Avenue ends at the square and there is also a tram that runs alongside the square ending at the Tunnel, the second oldest subway station.
Some of the nicest, most expensive hotels can also be found here as well as a vast collection of restaurants, fast food outlets and cafes. The square is also popular for public events such as New Year celebrations
