You are now in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Largo da Carioca (Carioca Square) is a very busy place, since it is located right in the commercial center of Rio and has one of the city Center’s major subway stops. Thus, many people who work in the Center pass through it everyday.
The Largo (Square) has a subway station, a church and a convent, and there are also many street vendors and folk artists. With only pedestrian traffic allowed, the square is a great place to go for a walk on any day of the week, rest a bit during the course of your tour and also take advantage of seeing the Santo Antônio church and its convent.
The Largo (Square) has had this name since 1723, due to a fountain that was built close to the church’s hillside, so that the water from the Carioca River could make it all the way here. This is why the fountain was named Chafariz Carioca (Carioca Fountain) and the square was named Largo da Carioca (Carioca Square). The square was built on top of an ancient pond in Rio, and the Santo Antônio convent was built even before this, in 1608, with baroque inspirations. The construction of the Santo Antônio church was completed in 1773.
In the square, you will also find a clock from 1947, but its story begins long before that. In 1909, the square gained a decorative chandelier with ornamental pieces (the second in all of Rio de Janeiro), which was then transformed into this clock, listed on the INEPAC registry in 1983.
Cross the Largo (Square), turn left on Av. Almirante Barroso, and then turn right on Av. Rio Branco. On this same block you will find the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts).
