Porta Nuova (“New Gate”) is the door to the city of Verona, built in the XVIth century by the architect Michele Sanmicheli. The gate was part of the fortifications of the city, and originally formed part of the city wall situated between two military bastions.
The gate has some elements of ancient Roman construction. Some of them even repeat the details of Arena di Verona.
The street from Porta Nuova leads directly to the gates of Piazza Bra, where the famous Roman Arena and Palazzo degli Honorij are situated. The palazzo was also built by Sanmicheli. The gate was officially opened in 1540, although the roof was not completed until thirty years later. In the XIXth century, during the Austrian reign in Verona, Porta Nuova was changed: two arches were added to allow traffic to pass through and the whole gate was faced with tufa.
Nowadays, the main railway station in Verona is named after this gate, as it is situated nearby.
