Old Arsenal
Old Arsenal
Genevans originally used this structure as a food warehouse in the 17th century. At the start of the Reformation, it was converted into an Arsenal until 1877. For a long time, barracks and armory were located here.
Today, the pillared building and its cobbled floor houses the Geneva State Archives. It can tell you a lot about the rich history of Geneva.
In the Arsenal, a huge number of old weapons have survived. The most significant artifacts are five cannons, which still guard the entrance to the building.
The pride of the townspeople is the three unique mosaics adorning the facade. They reflect major historical events in Geneva: Julius Caesar's arrival in town, the reception of the Huguenot refugees, and the first trade fair.
By the way, during the Escalade festival that I mentioned earlier, Genevans still hold a fair in front of the Arsenal. Here, you can drink delicious vegetable soup, and take home a beautiful, distinctive chocolate bowl as a souvenir. A small thing, but very nice!
