Age: Pliocene, 5–3 million years
The skeleton of hornless rhinoceros Chilotherium. Chilotherium is a typical representative of Hipparion fauna. Lower jaw of Chilotherium had a pair of very large incisors directed forward and up. Its body and head were massive, limbs were shortened. Powerful cervical spine and long spinous processes of the front dorsal vertebra point to a strong development of the neck muscles. Such a structure is associated with tusks of the lower jaw used for digging food out of the ground. Tusks could serve as a very formidable weapon.
