The Louwman Museum’s collection of Spykers is the largest in the world and is a unique part of Dutch national heritage. Spyker was established in 1880 by brothers Hendrik-Jan en Jacobus Spijker in Hilversum to manufacture carriages. In 1898 Spyker built the Golden State Coach, for use by the Royal Family. In 1900 the manufacture of cars commenced from a new factory in Amsterdam.
Spyker built top quality motor cars and they were even referred to as the Rolls-Royce of the continent. Poor management however, caused Spyker to file for bankruptcy as early as 1907, but the company re-emerged and endured several changes of ownership until 1925 when the curtain fell for good.
In a separate pavilion we have one of the most important cars in motoring history. It is the 1903 Spyker 60-HP, the first car in the world to be fitted with a six-cylinder engine and the first car with 4-wheel drive and brakes on all 4 wheels.
