On your left you can see the Gouwzee. This is a reasonably sheltered part of the Markermeer and former Zuiderzee that lies between Monnickendam and Marken. The Gouwzee has an extraordinary wildlife area. The clean, quiet water is a wonderful place for migratory birds. Many geese and ducks can be found here in winter.
Just look straight across the water. Do you see the former island of Marken in the distance? Nowadays this peninsula is connected to the North-Holland mainland by a dyke-motorway.
When the IJsselmeer was still the Zuiderzee and Marken was still an island, the fishing village was literally at the front line of the battle against the water. The small island was very vulnerable to high tides and an impetuous sea, as was the case in the flood in 1916. During this flood many lives were lost, but also a small miracle took place. While high waves hit Marken, Lijsje was born in a small house, in the attic, while underneath her crib water sloshed around the room.
A few days later Queen Wilhelmina visited the disaster area. She was so impressed by this story and the flood that Lijsje became her godchild. Lijsje’s parents received some money for a bed and children’s clothing. Lijsje’s name was later changed to Mina, after her godmother Wilhelmina.
